a chemical free home

One of my goals in going green is to reduce/remove as many chemicals from our home as possible. The biggest thing is going to be just changing my habits. I have recently started buying big jugs of vinegar because its super cheap and has a ton of uses. I put it in my down ball now as a fabric softener (and no your clothes don't smell like Easter eggs!), I put some in a squirt bottle to clean around the house, I even soak my wedding rings in it and it really makes them sparkle!
Check out this site for tons of great vinegar tips! I would love it you would share your favorite tip or one you are currently doing in our comments!

Thanks for the tips on vinegar use! I had no idea you could it to shine up your wedding rings! Mine are always so dirty and I HATE using chemicals on them because they seem so harsh. I also may try the downey ball trick. Thanks again for the good info! Keep up the green work; it's inspiring!

Would you happen to know a good baby wipe/cleaner all in one? I was in Babies R Us yesterday and a woman was asking a worker there about this. She said one of her coworkers told her there was a baby wipe that also cleaned toys/tray table/etc without the harsh chemicals. He pointed her towards the Seventh Generation wipes, but she said those do not clean his toys, etc. Then he pointed her to another brand and she said but those contain harsh chemicals. In the end she was going home to ask her coworker - and left me wondering which she was talking about, if there was even such a thing. What do you think - ever heard of such?

Thanks! The vinegar tips sound like they would do the trick too!

This is my favorite cleaning supply! I dilute mine with water. It works great to pretreat food stained baby clothes and burp clothes before washing. I also use it on the carpet in lieu of "Resolve!" Use it to clean your stove top, too...thanks, Steph!

I just wanted to tell you that I absolutely love your blog. I look forward to reading it each day. I am also a green-cleaning convert and I have found that vinegar cleans just about anything -- even my dog's yeast ridden ears. My spray bottle has vinegar mixed with water and a squeeze of seventh gen dish soap and I use it everywhere. It's amazing stuff!

Okay I'm reading that pretty much everyone is diluting their vinegar with water in a spray bottle. So how much vinegar & water do you use? Half in half? Thanks for the help! I'm really looking forward to using this on my counters, high-chairs, kids' toys, etc. instead of Clorox wipes.

I use roughly (i.e. I never really measure) 1 Tablespoon vinegar for every cup of water then I just add a small squeeze of soap. You can also add borax if you want but I seem to clean just as well without it.

I didn't think of it to clean rings - will definitely try that out! We're big vinegar fans here. I use full-strength as faux windex. Also, it works well on hardwoods.

I use a solution of 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar to spray my produce and then rinse with water. A study by Cooks magazine showed it to get rid of 98% of bacteria on the fruits and vegetables they tested.
