peanut butter..... the healthy way

A sweet friend of mine recently gave a bunch of us the peanut butter challenge. She was explaining to us that most of the store bought peanut butters are not natural and have adding preservatives and oils to them. I wanted to be so proud and say, but I buy Skippy Natural, it's a good one. She quickly pointed out to me that Skippy Natural is only 90% natural, so that means 10% other "stuff". I was shocked to find that most main brand peanut butters had hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup in them. I had tried true natural peanut butters before though and I didn't like them. I didn't like the texture, or the fact that you had to stir in the oil. I just wasn't sure I could make the switch. On Monday we met Matt for lunch at Harry's. They have a "make your own peanut butter" section there, so I told Matt I wanted to give it a try. It was just like grinding your own coffee! Charlie loves it! Matt loves it! Sweet,we are eating healthier peanut butter now! So, I am passing the healthy peanut butter challenge on to you now. Go grind some nuts and let me know what you think!

Oh and remember, if you start buying natural or organic peanut butter, it has to go in your fridge because there are no preservatives in it!

Hi! I found your blog through a long "blog chain" and I love all of your ideas. Just wanted to let you know that Costco has a yummy organic peanut butter (just peanuts and salt) for a great price!

Also, some places like Wild Oats have other nuts besides peanuts too...like cashews, almonds, or sunflower seeds that you can blend there as well.

charlie call's honey, jelly. He won't eat real pb&j (strange child), but he loves pb&honey which totally confuses my mom b/c he asks for pb&j even though he means honey!

robyn-
whole foods here had other nuts too!

hannah-
I tried the costo kind, but I felt like it was really soupy and kept spilling oil out every time I tried to stir it!

amber-
I'm impressed,I think I will stick to the machines making mine!

all we have to do is grind the nuts? no adding liquids or anything? i am going to try this...i hate the oily flavor of peanut butters

If you store the costco one upside down, you eliminate the oil spillage! A little trick my hubby came up with.

I need to find a place that we can make our own pb too! I buy the Trader Joe's stuff and I have been happy with that, but I like to try new things! My boys would have pb&j EVERY SINGLE DAY for lunch if I let them.
